Huonville High School was a finalist in the Zayed Future Energy Prize in 2016.
We were third in the Oceania region in the high school section.
In 2017 we were selected winners of the Zayed Future Energy Prize. Two students went to Abu Dhabi to receive the Prize which included a cheque for $US 130,000. With this we installed 36 kilowatts of solar panels on the school and refurbished a cottage in the school grounds, turning it into the Huon Energy Futures Hub. This is a showcase for renewable energy and energy efficiency and a base for meetings of the Zayed Huon Energy Futures Team who meet weekly to organise events.
These events included a whole school energy audit, a Huon Valley Climate Forum with local schools, a community FIX IT Day, STEM Expos, Swap Shops, a Pedal Powered Cinema Night, a Sustainable House Tour, a whole school Climate Week, and our Renewable Energy Innovators of the Huon Valley film.

From 2018 we formed a partnership with Greening Australia to run the Tasmanian Youth Climate Leaders Program. For this Program we were selected as Australian winners of the Energy Globe Award 2020.
In 2020 as part of this program the Zayed Team’s action was to produce a series of short films on Renewable Energy Innovators in the Huon Valley: A Virtual Tour. Students were mentored by film maker Annie Venables.
